Description
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage
The Department of Wildlife gave the orphanage to the National Zoological Gardens in 1978. In 1982, a captive breeding program was started. Here, more than 20 elephants have been bred since the program's start. The orphanage strives to provide these elephants with a natural environment. There are, however, a few exceptions: all of the infants under three years old are still bottle fed by the mahouts and volunteers, and the elephants are bathed twice daily in the river.
Activities in Pinnawala
Additionally, each animal receives approximately 76 kg of green matter and 2 kilogram from a meal bag that contains maize and rice bran each day. Many tourists from Sri Lanka and beyond visit the orphanage, which claims to house the largest herd of captive elephants in the world, on a regular basis. Elephant watching is undoubtedly the major draw, as it's quite a spectacle to watch them bathe.
